El Tai Chi, mejor que el ejercicio para aliviar el dolor en la fibromialgia

El Tai Chi es más eficaz que el ejercicio aeróbico en el tratamiento del dolor muscular crónico, la fatiga, la ansiedad y la depresión asociados a la fibromialgia

La fibromialgia es una enfermedad –está reconocida como tal por la  Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) desde 1992– de origen desconocido que padece un 2-3% de la población, muy especialmente mujeres. Una enfermedad que además de por la fatiga extrema, la rigidez muscular, las dificultades para dormir, la ansiedad y la depresión, se caracteriza sobre todo por la presentación de un dolor crónico que afecta a todos los músculos del cuerpo. Tal es así que, como ocurre en las enfermedades que cursan con este síntoma, el tratamiento no farmacológico más comúnmente recomendado para el dolor crónico en la fibromialgia es el ejercicio aeróbico.

Una recomendación que, sin embargo, no puede ser llevada a cabo por todos los afectados. De hecho, son muchos los casos en los que el ejercicio empeora aún más el dolor. Pero puede que haya una alternativa a tener que salir a correr o a caminar. Y es que como muestra un estudio llevado a cabo por investigadores de la  Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Tufts en Boston (EE.UU.), el Tai Chi es, cuando menos, tan eficaz como el ejercicio a la hora de mejorar el dolor crónico asociado a la fibromialgia.

Como explica Chenchen Wang, directora de esta investigación publicada en la revista «  The BMJ», «nuestros hallazgos sugieren que quizás haya llegado el momento de replantearse qué tipo de ejercicio es el más efectivo para los pacientes con enfermedades que cursan con dolor crónico».

 

Eficaz y seguro

El Tai Chi es un deporte que, desarrollado inicialmente como un arte marcial en la antigua China, se caracteriza por la realización de movimientos suaves y fluidos. En consecuencia, la práctica del Tai Chi facilita la estabilidad postural y la relajación, razón por la que es un ejercicio gimnástico ampliamente recomendado para personas de todas las edades. Sin embargo, las bondades del Tai Chi trascienden de las meramente ‘gimnásticas’. Y es que según han concluido distintas investigaciones, el Tai Chi parece mejorar el riesgo cardiovascular de sus practicantes. Y a ello se aúna que, como han sugerido algunos estudios llevados a cabo con un número escaso de participantes y una metodología no demasiado ‘rigurosa’, también podría mejorar tanto la salud física como mental de los pacientes con fibromialgia. Pero, ¿es realmente así?

Para responder a esta pregunta, los autores contaron con la participación de 261 adultos diagnosticados de fibromialgia que, con una edad promedio de 52 y en su gran mayoría mujeres –92% del total–, no habían practicado ninguna técnica tradicional de ejercicio o meditación durante los últimos seis meses.

Los resultados mostraron que, transcurridas las 24 semanas, todos los participantes experimentaron una mejoría de sus síntomas. Sin embargo, esta mejoría resultó superior y estadísticamente significativa en el caso de los participantes que practicaron Tai Chi durante las 24 semanas. Todo ello, además, sin ningún efecto adverso.

 

Múltiples ventajas

Como concluye Chenchen Wang, «la mejoría de la sintomatología con el Tai Chi es similar, cuando no superior, a la que se logra con el ejercicio aeróbico, el tratamiento no farmacológico más comúnmente prescrito a día de hoy. Así, este enfoque ‘mente-cuerpo’ debe ser considerado una opción terapéutica en el abordaje multidisciplinar de la fibromialgia».
