En biología, un virus (del latín virus: toxina o veneno) es un agente infeccioso que sólo puede multiplicarse dentro de las células de un ser vivo: seres humanos, animales y plantas.

Se conocen aproximadamente 200 virus causantes de enfermedades infectocontagiosas que se transmiten a través de las gotitas de Flügge. Entre ellos, los más conocidos son los que causan la varicela, el sarampión (hoy casi erradicado gracias a la vacuna) y la rubéola, y el llamado síndrome de pie-mano-boca.

Entre estas virosis está incluido, por supuesto, el COVID-19, causado por el nuevo coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

Todas estas enfermedades se pueden manifestar con un cuadro gastrointestinal (náuseas, vómitos y diarrea) durante los primeros días y, además, con manifestaciones en piel o mucosas.

Las manifestaciones en las mucosas se conocen con el nombre de enantema. Constituye un grupo de lesiones muy variadas e inespecíficas que lesionan la mucosa (por ejemplo, de la boca) y pueden causar dolor al tragar (odinofagia). Por este motivo, la aparición de enantema en pacientes con COVID-19 reportada por diversas sociedades y asociaciones científicas de dermatología y alergia en todo el mundo obligó a reconsiderar las formas de presentación y los signos y síntomas asociados con esta enfermedad pandémica.

El enantema tiene su equivalente en la piel: el exantema. Se trata de lesiones variadas, tipo máculas (manchas rojizas), pápulas (sobre elevamiento de la piel como una roncha) y lesiones de tipo urticarianas distribuidas en todo el cuerpo.

Si bien los científicos aún no cuentan con muchos detalles, lo cierto es que ya existen evidencias acerca de la presencia de ambos tipos de lesiones en el COVID-19, que aparecerían aproximadamente en el día diez de la enfermedad.

Los síntomas principales del COVID-19 siguen siendo la fiebre, dificultad respiratoria, tos, odinofagia, pérdida del olfato (anosmia) y pérdida del gusto (disgeusia). Por eso, es muy importante tener presente la aparición de enantema y de exantema en un paciente con otros signos y síntomas asociados o aun cuando se presentan en forma aislada.

Hoy en día, si bien en varias regiones del país se flexibilizaron las medidas de aislamiento físico contra el COVID-19, es muy importante seguir cumpliendo las medidas de prevención universales:

– Uso de tapabocas: debe cubrir la nariz y la boca.

– Distanciamiento físico de por lo menos dos metros.

– Lavado de manos frecuente.

– Uso de alcohol en gel.

– Ventilación de los ambientes.

Es fundamental, en esta etapa y en esta época del año, reforzar nuestro compromiso para con uno mismo y para con la comunidad.
